India's first voter died at the age of 105

India's first voter passed away at the age of 105.

It is also said that Shyam Saran Negi was the first voter when India held its first general election after independence from British colonial rule.

Shyam Saran has cast his vote in every election India has held since then.

Three days before his death on Saturday, he had also mailed his vote in the state election in Himachal Pradesh.

The retired teacher was elected by the Europeans in 1951 following the decision to hold the election five months earlier due to a snow storm.

As a result, the Indian National Congress won a landslide victory and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first democratically elected Prime Minister.

This election also marked the end of the British colonial rule that ruled the Europeans for 100 years from 1848-1947.
